Character comedian Freddie Meredith makes his Edinburgh Fringe debut with Freddie Meredith: Need a Light? set entirely in the familiar, hazy world of bad decisions - the smoking area of a nightclub. Centred on the overly friendly stranger who asks for a lighter and never leaves, the show is a hilarious portrait of performative masculinity, awkward oversharing and the desperation to connect. We sat down for a chat to find out more.
For someone who hasn’t seen the show yet, what can they expect from Need A Light??
It's a character comedy set in a nightclub. It's interactive, fast-moving and hopefully feels like you've been cornered by the most well-intentioned bloke in Britain.
The show explores oversharing between strangers. Why do you think people are sometimes more honest with someone they’ve just met than with close friends?
I think strangers don't have a version of you yet. You don't have to protect an identity or live up to anything. There's something freeing about knowing you can probably disappear from each other's lives five minutes later.
Are any of your characters based on real people?
Not directly. I'm much more interested in behaviours than individuals. They are an accumulation of people I've met, moments I've witnessed, stories I’ve been told and parts of myself when they suit the character.
The show explores somebody trying on different versions of themselves. Is that something you think everyone does?
I don't think anyone is completely themselves all the time. We're all adapting slightly depending on who we're with. The funny thing about this character hopefully is that he's aware he's doing it, but he’s not aware he's absolutely terrible at it.
You've worked across television, theatre, online content and live comedy. Which medium feels most like home?
Live. There's nothing quite like sharing a room with people and discovering something together. I love screen work too, but live performance has an unpredictability that you can't really replicate anywhere else, and you can never be fully in control of that, which is true to life.
What's the most memorable conversation you've ever had with a stranger on a night out?
A stranger once asked me, "What sort of bloke are you?" It completely floored me. I still think about it. Still working on my answer.
As your Fringe debut, what are you most excited about experiencing during the festival itself?
I'm excited to do the show every day and watch it evolve. I also can't wait to spend a month surrounded by people making things. There's something really energising about everyone committing to an idea at the same time. And I imagine I'll end up in quite a few smoking areas.
